Study for Princess Macha III

F E McWilliam, 1957

Study for Princess Macha III is a maquette for FE McWilliamÂ’s monumental sculpture Princess Macha of the Golden Hair of the House of Ulster commissioned in 1957 for the Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry. The sculpture shows Macha, a figure in Irish mythology, who reputedly founded the first infirmary in the country in 300BC. The maquette represents a fine example of McWilliamÂ’s mature style and will now join the large collection of works and associated items belonging to the artist at the FE McWilliam Gallery and Studio.
