Suite of Early George II Furniture
Unknown artist, 1740

The suite comprises a settee and a set of eight chairs, all with their original needlework covers. The frames are walnut with veneered seat-rails centred by scallop shells framed by scrolling acanthus leaves. With cabriole legs back and front, the latter with volutes, acanthus leaves, and claw-and-ball feet; the settee has shaped and outward-scrolled arms. The original needlework covers are finely preserved. They are worked with an attractive design of scrolling branches bearing carnations, peonies, and magnolia and prunus flowers, in tones of red picked out in ivory on a plain, bluish-green background. The backs and seats have large-headed gilt nailing.
