Sunset on Stonehenge

Copley Fielding, 1818

This handsome drawing, full of the spirit of Romanticism, made a notable addition to the Devizes Museum's large topographical collection, which already included local views by Cotman, Prout, Cattermole, and other masters of the period. The collection had been built up by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society since its formation in 1853, and complemented an equally impressive archaeological collection. Copley Fielding was one four brothers who all practised watercolour (his brother Thales was an early friend of Delacroix).
