Tabernas Desert Run

The viewer is first confronted by a familiar bicycle with an odd home made 'engine' in a vitrine which immediately conveys a sense of preciousness. The back of the vitrine has a watercolour of a cactus. There are references to environmental protection, old western movies, museum presentation methods and the charm of DIY transport. Starling crossed the Tabernas Desert in Spain on a bicycle powered by compressed hydrogen in September 2004. The only biproduct of the journey was water which was used to produce the cactus painting. Nominated for the Turner prize, 2005.
