The Ashby St Mary Hoard
Unknown artist, c. 17 BC
These uninscribed coins were minted by the Iceni tribe of East Anglia in the years immediately before the Roman invasion of Britain. They are colloquially known as ‘Norfolk Wolf’ staters due to their distinctive reverse that features a wolf with its jaws open. The motif is supposedly linked to Indo-European cosmic myths dating back to the Bronze Age.
