The Blue Closet

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1857

Two queens, one on the left in red with green sleeves, one on the right in crimson and grey, are standing playing music on opposite sides of a carved and inlaid dulcimer or clavichord. Two other ladies stand behind them, singing. Above their heads the wall is covered with blue and white tiling, as is also the floor, suggesting the title of the picture. Strong blue touches on an escutcheon at the back carry the idea still further.
