The Dead Christ Supported by Angels & St James on his Way to Execution
Marco Zoppo, 1455–1457
The recto depicts the broken figure of the Christ supported by angels framed by a classical tabernacle supporting additional angels. Particularly moving are the anguished face of Christ and the wailing expressions of certain angels. The verso portrays St James being led to his execution set in a triumphal arch festooned with swags and enlivened by the cantankerous actions of a group of putti.
