The Devil's Bridge Waterfall, Aberystwyth, Wales
John Piper, c. 1944

This romantic scene – officially titled The Devil’s Bridge Waterfall – has recently been identified by the Brecknock Museum as a study of Bwa Maen, a sublime limestone formation in the Vale of Neath, Powys, South Wales. John Piper visited the area in 1942 with Geoffrey Grigson, and took a keen interest in the history of artists who had travelled there in the 18th and 19th centuries. Piper’s picture now makes a handsome addition to Brecknock Museum’s art collection, which focuses on works created in or inspired by the dramatic scenery of the Brecon Beacons from the 18th century to the present day.
