The Great Gate of St Augustine's Monastery, Canterbury

Francis Grose, 1768

This view shows Abbot Fyndon's Great Gate and the adjoining hall with much interesting architectural detail. Grose shows Lady Wooton's Green before extensive alterations in the 19th century and the almost total destruction of 1942. The late medieval houses on the right are shown to be much larger and more extensive than had previously been known.
