The Last Cascade of Isola di Sora
Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld, 1787

Bidauld painted many open-air studies of this mountainous region between Rome and Naples during his five years in Italy. The artist preferred unprepossessing desolate sites in his Italian landscapes. He used mottled brushwork and intricate colour harmonies of grey, green and brown to depict the hills, mountains, clumps and meandering rivers.
