The Sculthorpe Hoard

Unknown artist, -55

This hoard of 24 Iron Age coins was found in 2015 by metal detectorists in Sculthorpe, Norfolk. The 20 gold staters and four silver units were minted by the Iceni tribe of ancient Britons. This form of coinage originated in Greece and spread across Europe to Britain during the fourth century BC. The hoard contains nine gold coins of the Continental style and 11 of the earliest Iceni type. These 11 Iceni coins feature an unusual reverse image of a wolf-like creature with bristles running down its back. The hoard now joins the fine numismatic collection of Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery.
