Alberto Morrocco was a Scottish painter who was best known for his brightly coloured still lifes and Mediterranean beach scenes. He was born in Aberdeen in 1917 and studied at the city’s Gray’s School of Art.
In the early 1950s Morrocco travelled to Paris, where he saw a collection of paintings of chefs and waiters by Chaïm Soutine. The Second Chef, a portraitof a Dundonian chef painted by Morrocco in 1958, shows the impact of this visit.
Aberdeen Art Gallery holds six paintings by Morrocco. The addition of The Second Chef illustrates the influences that led to the development of the artist’s mature style.
