Triptych: Silver Birches & Bindweed & Beneath a Rotting Tree

Michael Porter, 1991

© The artist

Porter's paintings provide fragments from the Derbyshire woodland near to where he was born and brought up. It is as if the works have been put under a painterly microscope. He works simultaneously with both oil and water based paints and exploits the inability of these two media to mix, thus achieving a wide repertoire of surfaces, from marble-like complexity to watery simplicity.
