Two drawings of Seville

Hercules Brabazon Brabazon, 1821–1906

The Whitworth Art Gallery's holdings of British drawings and watercolours can be ranked, in importance if not in size, alongside the university collections in Oxford and Cambridge. The Laurence Harbottle Gift extends the Whitworth's existing holdings of the work of Brabazon, Cox and Holland, which are already quite extensive. Watercolours and drawings by Brabazon are numerous; they mostly consist of studies of landscapes and buildings observed in the course of his wanderings in Europe and further afield. The Whitworth has a substantial collection of them, to which these two drawings are a most welcome addition.
