Undulating Yellow Vessel Form

Ashraf Hanna, 2019

Ashraf Hanna is an Egyptian-born British ceramics artist who has lived and worked in Wales for more than 20 years.

Hanna trained first in theatre design at Central Saint Martins and later in ceramics and glassat the Royal College of Art in London. His early works in clay were small-scale raku-fired pieces decorated with patterns.

Undulating Yellow Vessel Form represents Hanna’s current practice of making larger-scale sculptural pieces. The sharp lines are inspired by ancient Egyptian architecture, while the softer contrasting elements are informed by the rise and fall of the desert landscape.

The stoneware vessel now enters the ceramics collection at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, where the acquisitions policy includes a commitment to work made by artists in Wales.
