This painting is a superb example of MoonÂ’s work as it is refreshingly disconcerting and purely visual with a preoccupation with colour. Moon was one of a small group of abstract artists in the 1960s who were intent on returning to the basics in painting - clarity and distinctness. His exceptional sense of colour was key to the power of his art practice. This work contextualises and enriches other major 1960s abstract holdings in SouthamptonÂ’s permanent collection including John HoylandÂ’s '16.10.68', ArtFunded in 1997 and Robyn DennyÂ’s 'Time of Day III'. This work was purchased with additional funding from the David and Liza Brown Bequest Fund through the Art Fund.
