View of Matlock, Derbyshire
William Marlow, c. 1780

This view of Matlock Bath depicts the River Derwent, the improved road system and the Old Bath Hotel catering for tourists to the area. Like many contemporary paintings it shows people going about their daily business; walking, fishing, riding which is typical of MarlowÂ’s style. The painting was engraved by S Middiman and published in BoydellÂ’s Views in 1789 and the museum holds some hand coloured prints from engravings of MarlowÂ’s work by Boydell.
