Art Funded by you

Woman with a Fan

Sir Matthew Smith, 1925

© estate of the artist

A nude study of a woman seated in an armchair and holding a fan in her left hand. She leans back against the chair and looks down towards her left. Drapery of blue and green lies across her lap and behind her head. Vera Cuningham, the model, was also the model for a whole series of Smith's most masterly paintings of this period. Sir Philip Hendy has called this 'one of the masterpieces of English painting; a heavy-weight champion, a tremendous monument of glowing flesh'.
