This gold mount is filigree-decorated within a beaded wire border.

Pendants set with garnets and wire decoration were popular in the 7th century AD. Comparison with other saxon jewellery indicates that this came from a womanÂ’s necklace pendant, and was probably the centre of a larger pendant. Chelmsford only has a small collection of Saxon artefacts and therefore this beautiful work is a welcome addition and will be used to interpret the so called Dark Ages.

Provenance

Discovered in mid Essex by a metal detectorist and declared Treasure in 2007.
