Autoportraits: 1) Fly Girl Series, 1993; 2) Fly Girl in Harlem, 1996-2003
Chila Burman, 2006
These two prints originate from a series in which Burman explored and asserted her identity against the backdrop of British Asian culture in the early 1990s.
They are made using photomontage and hand-applied marks and colour. These self-portraits challenge traditional notions of ‘femininity’ as well as misconceived and stereotypical assumptions about Asian women. The works reference aspects of both Western and Indian culture, from Bollywood, Pop Art and Hindu philosophy to Indian comics, Dada and Surrealism and the urban music and fashion of 1990s Britain.
