AL.B.P.F.M.D.L.XI.' with the date repeated in smaller letters above. Formerly attributed to Bronzino whose pupil the artist was. It is an expression of mid 16th century Florentine taste with the austere costume, the cameo, statuette of Apollo, decorated furniture and an incongruous nude in the background - a general air of refinement, sophistication and aristocratic hauteur.
Provenance
Acquired by Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild (d.1874) whose collection passed to his daughter Hannah; hers by 1878; by descent; Sotheby's, 1977; Bradford Walker; Sotheby's, 1982.
