A view of Thirlmere, taken from the west side of the lake and looking north to the Skiddaw/Saddleback range of mountains.

The site is now under water, since Thirlmere became a reservoir at the end of the 19th century. The scenery of the Lake District exerted a great hold over Rathbone and his best pictures are those inspired there. He frequently collaborated with George Morland who painted the figures of a sportsman with his dog talking to a mother and child.
