Peake appointed principal painter to Henry Prince of Wales soon after accession of James I and painted number of portraits of him and brother Charles.
In the past, this picture was known as a portrait of Henry and even as James, 7th Lord Hay's son. But opinion is that the portrait is an early likemess of Charles I, when aged about five.
