He was sent to study in Italy by the Dublin Society and became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1777. Peters took Holy Orders in 1783 but continued to paint, largely commissions from the Dukes of Manchester and Rutland, as well as historical and religious subjects. This work is a good example of late 18th century portraiture.
