This vignette portrait of Thomas Shairp is one of six portraits of the Shairp family.
The Shairps, who were friends of the artist, lived in Houston House, near Upwall in West Lothian.

The Shairp family at Houston House near Edinburgh until the house passed by marriage to Mr Ian Lindsay; sold when Houston House became a hotel in the 1960's; Christie's, Edinburgh, 1991; Mr Andrew Brown, 369 Gallery, Edinburgh.
