This full length portrait was painted specifically to hang in Gainsborough's show rooms in Bath to advertise his special abilities.
He chose a pose for Miss Ford which would exploit his skill in painting the satin of the ivory silk sacque dress. Miss Ann Ford was a controversial figure in Bath society at the time.
