Red Movement

Bridget Riley, 2005

© 2007 Bridget Riley. All rights reserved. Courtesy Karsten Schubert, London.

The composition of this painting is a sequence of curving elements set within a framework of parallel diagonals.

Its fusion of figure and ground creates a wave-like abstraction that celebrates the pleasure of vision and challenges our perception. Riley uses pattern and colour on an epic scale to immerse the viewer in intense sensation. She has described her paintings as opening a 'small gap of pure perception'.

This work was purchased with additional funding from the David and Liza Brown Bequest Fund through the Art Fund.
