This portrait fragment was once part of an early double portrait of the artist, and most probably shows his first wife.
It is a remarkable discovery and joins the other section of the composition, the 'Self-portrait' already in the collection of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, which is the earliest identified work by Hayman.
