Framework Knitters Museum
With a National Art Pass you get
Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington explores the history of framework knitting, part of the textiles industry that instigated the Nottingham lace industry.
The stocking frame machine originated in the East Midlands and was a prominent part of 19th-century life in Britain, particularly in the museum's location of Nottinghamshire. As a rare surviving example of a framework knitters' yard, the museum explores the families who lived and worked together shaping the textile industry that dominated the area.
See original knitting frames in action, shop for knitted creations, explore unique collections – a particular highlight is a genuine pair of Queen Victoria's stockings – or have a go at knitting you own souvenir on a vintage Griswold knitting machine. You can also experience the living and working conditions of Victorian craftspeople, plus partake in family activities, workshops and creative projects happening year-round.
Discover the rich history of framework knitting from its role in the Industrial Revolution to the infamous Luddite riots of the 1800s.
