Rutland County Museum offers an introduction to the smallest county in England, telling the story of Rutland through displays of archaeology, history and rural life.

Located in Oakham, the museum is housed in the old Riding School of the Rutland Fencible Cavalry, a historic building dating back to the late 18th century. It is a great place to learn about the culture of Rutland and enjoy a day out exploring the county's past.

Discover Rutland's history

The museum's collection of interesting and historically significant artefacts tell the story of the county, from its prehistoric past to its more recent history. Explore exhibits on archaeology, rural life, social history and more, including an impressive range of agricultural exhibits, the only surviving New Drop Gallows in England and an Anglo-Saxon gold buckle and pendant from Burley-on-the-Hill.

See the Brooke Reliquary

A popular attraction for visitors interested in history and art, the Brooke Reliquary, is a small, intricately decorated casket dating back to the 13th century. Its decoration features scenes of Christ and two apostles or saints, and it's considered a significant piece of medieval religious art.
