Masterclass with Nichola Eddery

10 August 2024
11:00am - 4:00pm

Horses in art over the last over three hundred years from Stubbs to Munnings to our contemporary pieces.

Join experienced tutor and well-known equine artist Nichola Eddery for a drawing day inspired by masterpieces in Palace House exploring horses in art over three hundred years from Stubbs to Munnings, to our contemporary pieces.

Suitable for beginners and more experienced artists, you will enjoy mastering Nichola’s step-by-step approach to drawing the horse from the incredible paintings on display in Palace House.

Nichola is a classically trained, professional, and exhibiting artist who studied for several years at renowned ateliers in Italy, France, and America to learn traditional methods that originate from the Renaissance masters. Nichola invites you to learn how to draw the horse through her unique method; the day will involve learning the fundamental principles of drawing: line, shape, proportion, perspective, light theory, value, and shading. In the morning, you will learn the envelope and block-in stages to capture proportion, likeness and movement inspired by 19th Century paintings. After lunch, you will learn about light theory and how to capture the horse’s anatomical structure through shading inspired by 21st Century works. This intense masterclass will help you understand these concepts and enable you to achieve a developed horse drawing whilst capturing the unique styles of a range of artists.

All materials provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks.

2024 marks the 300th anniversary of Stubb’s birth. This workshop is part of a programme of events by the National Horseracing Museum, celebrating the work of George Stubbs this year.
