Explore Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes: A Marriage of Art exhibition, with curator's talk and Look Club session
Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes have been described by curators at Worcester City Art Gallery as ‘the power couple of British Impressionism’.
Founders of the Newlyn School, the pair are renowned for their charming scenes of Cornish seaside and rural life, painted in the open air and often featuring children, the working fishing community and farming folk in teh area around teh fishing village of Newlyn. In many ways, their work continued the popular tradition of Victorian genre painting, with its cosy and nostalgic feel.
But with the couple having, between them, solid artistic training in London, New York, the Netherlands and Brittany, at a time of monumental artistic foment and the rise of many different artistic schools and styles, is there more to the pair than nostalgia and sentimentality – and is the ‘power couple of British Impressionism’ an accurate description?
Look Club is a chance for those who love art to meet, see galleries, exhibitions and works of art together, and discuss what they like about the art they're seeing – and what they like dislike, too! It's not a lecture or seminar, and everyone's observations, ideas and opinions are valid – and encouraged!
