A display of German artist Kurt Schwitters' portraits that he completed during his time in Ambleside between 1945-1948.

A display of German artist Kurt Schwitters' portraits that he completed during his time in Ambleside between 1945-1948. Why did he produce these pieces? Who do they show and what is their connection to the town?

Through a selection of portraits owned by The Armitt and loaned to the museum, we explore Kurt Schwitters' life, his connections to people in Ambleside and who the individuals were. Watch our video to hear what people thought about Schwitters and the individuals in the portraits, have a go at drawing your own portrait and pick up a book to read more about the artists' life and work.
