Peter Brathwaite: Rediscovering Black Portraiture

18 May 2024 - 1 January 2025
Free to all

Restaging famous paintings with household objects to reimagine their Black sitters.

During the first lockdown in 2020, the Bedford-based baritone, artist and broadcaster Peter Brathwaite reimagined over 100 works of art to feature a Black sitter for the #GettyMuseumChallenge.

The exhibition stretches across The Higgins, showcasing interventions of Caribbean dolls as well as new interpretation of objects already on display, alongside the re-staged photographs and personal reflections. Highlights include Brathwaite's recreation of The Paston Treasure, exploring themes of dehumanisation and representation.
