Material Worlds: Contemporary Artists and Textiles

9 October - 15 December 2024
Free to all

See textiles in a new light and discover artists playing with the medium.

The Mead Gallery hosts Material Worlds, an innovative exhibition by Hayward Gallery Touring, curated by Caroline Achaintre. Featuring work by contemporary artists who use textiles in unconventional and radical ways, see everyday materials transformed into strikingly theatrical, bold and sometimes humorous artworks.

The exhibition explores themes such as the human body, identity, gender, race, heritage, and folklore, demonstrating textiles' cultural significance and potential in contemporary art. Featuring artists including Caroline Achaintre, Tonico Lemos Auad, Jonathan Baldock and Phyllida Barlow, amongst others. Material Worlds shows how the stuff of everyday life can unexpectedly be transformed into something extraordinary.
