Experience Pre-Raphaelite paintings through the sense of smell.
Curated by academic Dr Christina Bradstreet, this landmark exhibition investigates the significance of smell in Pre-Raphaelite paintings and wider Victorian society. From images of daydreaming figures smelling flowers to the evocative burning of incense, scent is a major motif in these paintings, yet it is rarely considered as a lens to think about the works of art.
Associated with hedonism, beauty and emotions, the sense of smell is also connected to debates at the time about urbanisation, health and women’s independence. Artists on display include John Everett Millais, Evelyn De Morgan, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and more. And don't miss the optional scent experience that bring to life the scents suggested in some of the paintings.
