Journey through the evolution of floral art, from historical still life to contemporary interpretation
I See His Blood Upon the Rose explores the evolution of flowers in art, from botanical illustrations to 17th-century still lifes. The exhibition highlights their role as symbols of political influence and human control over nature, and juxtaposes historical artists like Mary Delany and Rachel Ruysch with contemporary creators such as Judith Linhares and Tracey Emin. Linhares challenges postmodern perspectives on floral painting, while Emin interprets her neon works as widespread love poems.
Other notable artists on display include Robert Mapplethorpe, Penny Slinger and Jo Spence, showcasing both historical and modern interpretations of floral themes.
