Ceramic sculptures exploring the human experience
This exhibition celebrates the work of British-Nigerian sculptor, Lawson Oyekan (b.1961). Oyekan’s ceramic sculptures explore the human experience, the fragility of life and its strength to overcome. His large thin-walled vessels appear robust, yet delicate, covered in scar-like marks that resemble the ancient spiritual vessels of the Benue Valley.
Oyekan’s works are often born out of encounters with a particular place. Describing himself as a nomadic artist, Oyekan works in clays that are local to regions in which he inhabits. He hand-builds and inscribes upon their surfaces as part of an on-going dialogue, both in English and his native Yoruba, reflecting upon his experiences and the people and stories he meets on his travels.
This significant solo show marks the first exhibition of the artist’s work in a UK public institution in almost two decades. It will bring together works from across the artists career and provide an intimate insight into Oyekan’s practice, through a newly commissioned film by the critically acclaimed French photographer, Zavier Lambours.
This exhibition was produced with Cross Lane Projects, Kendal and Maison Gallery 19 Paul Fort, Paris.
Exhibition included with house admission.
