A bold exploration of Britain’s colonial past and its enduring impact
Elsa James confronts Britain’s 'national amnesia' about its colonial history in her first major solo exhibition at Firstsite. Using photography, neon, screen print and sound, she examines the psychological effects of transatlantic enslavement and the resilience of Black communities.
Large-scale photographic works respond to Christina Sharpe’s idea of how the legacy of the slave ship still marks contemporary Black life, while James’ engagement with an 18th-century plantation overseer's diaries uncovers overlooked histories. Through her striking and thought-provoking pieces, the artist challenges perceptions, inviting moments of reflection, discussion and connection.
