Journey through Edo Japan in this lyrical exploration of its natural beauty and vibrant urban life.
Utagawa Hiroshige was one of Japan’s most prolific and celebrated artists, whose serene landscapes and poetic visions resonated across society.
This is the first exhibition of Hiroshige at the British Museum – and London’s first in over 25 years. Unlike many artists of his time, Hiroshige was born into a samurai family but crossed social boundaries to depict everyday life.
Featuring prints, drawings, books and paintings, the exhibition traces Hiroshige’s enduring legacy, from Edo Japan to Vincent van Gogh and contemporary artists like Julian Opie.
