A raw and intimate photographic portrait of Okinawa’s past and present.
Okinawan photographer Mao Ishikawa presents a striking survey of work, spanning from the 1970s to today. Renowned for her candid, documentary-style images, Ishikawa captures life in Okinawa, a place shaped by Japanese sovereignty and American military occupation.
Her seminal series Women of Okinawa from the 1980s focuses on Okinawan women’s relationships with African American servicemen, while later works, such as Fences and My Family, continue to interrogate themes of colonialism, race and identity.
With more than 60 works on display, this exhibition offers an unfiltered and deeply personal perspective on Okinawa’s complex history.
