A dizzying array of artists who flouted taste to embrace the new.
Covering the late 19th century to today, Sussex Modernism highlights artists often left out of traditional narratives about modernism. Looking at varied creative ideas outside of London, the exhibition features early pioneers, critics of the movement, overlooked women artists and countercultural artists from the 1960s to 1980s who flouted established tastes to embrace the new.
Bringing together artists who either lived in, or had a connection to, Sussex, a wide range of approaches and ideas come together in the show, interrogating what it means to be a ‘regional’ artist.
