Museum of the Year 2013 finalist

Housed in a landmark industrial building on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, BALTIC is a major international centre for contemporary art.

BALTIC has no permanent collection, but provides a full calendar of exhibitions and events across four diverse spaces. The programme ranges from blockbuster exhibitions to new work and projects created by artists working within the local community.

The gallery opened to the public in 2002. As part of its inaugural exhibition B.OPEN, American artist Chris Burden created a one-twentieth-size scale model of the Tyne Bridge in meccano. On level 4 of the gallery, visitors could view both versions simultaneously. Ten years later, Elizabeth Price was named winner of the Turner Prize 2012 for the exhibition HERE, which was curated by and presented at BALTIC in the spring of that year.

A full archive of exhibitions at the gallery can be found on its website.
