Discover archaeological collections covering 2,500 years of history, including some of the most important Roman finds in Britain, at Colchester Castle.

Built on the site of the Temple of Claudius, a symbol of Roman power when Colchester was the capital of Britain, Colchester Castle is the largest Norman keep in Europe. With its impressive architecture, extensive collections, and interactive experiences, the castle is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and anyone curious about England’s rich past.

What to see

First opened to the public as a museum in 1860 Colchester Castle’s archaeological collections are recognised as some of the most significant in Britain. Highlights include the famed Colchester Vase, adorned with gladiatorial imagery, and the Fenwick Hoard, a collection of Roman silver and gold treasure hurriedly hidden away. The museum boasts significant collections from other eras as well, including Bronze Age cauldrons, medieval paintings, and even Civil War armour.

Interactive experiences

Try your hand at building a Norman archway, dress up as an Iron Age Briton, or even steer a virtual chariot around Colchester’s recently uncovered Roman Circus. The museum offers guided tours led by experts, venturing down into the Roman vaults and up onto the castle roof, granting visitors panoramic views of the town.

Take a tablet

You can hire an interactive tablet from the Welcome Desk, packed with mini games, photos and augmented reality showing how some of the Castle spaces might have originally appeared.

If the castle whets your history appetite, why not complete your Colchester trip with a visit to the Natural History Museum (Colchester) which is just a short walk away.
