Hastings Museum and Art Gallery has rich and varied collections, with artefacts from prehistory to the present day, and from every continent.

Founded in 1892, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery (HMAG) boasts a diverse collection that includes fine and decorative arts, local and natural history and world art. Whether you’re interested in history, art or simply the natural world, HMAG has something to pique your interest.

Local and global history

Embark on a journey from prehistory to the Saxon era and beyond, uncovering the stories of the people who shaped the region. For a broader perspective, head to the World Art displays, where you can admire artefacts from various cultures. The museum also holds a significant collection of Native North American objects, and looks at the life of Grey Owl. The celebrated Canadian conservationist was, in fact, Archie Belaney (1888-1938), born and brought up in Hastings.

Exhibitions

The gallery’s collection of fine art, features works by local artists as well as renowned painters and sculptors. From traditional paintings to contemporary installations, the art gallery offers a diverse and thought-provoking visual experience. The venue frequently hosts events and activities, making it a vibrant hub for the community. From talks and workshops to special exhibitions, there's always something new to discover at HMAG.

Celebrate wildlife

Explore dioramas depicting the diverse wildlife of the local area, and come face-to-face with prehistoric giants in the interactive dinosaur gallery. Great for families with children, this section allows visitors to learn about the fascinating world of dinosaurs through engaging exhibits.


While you're in the area you could take the 5 minute drive to Hastings Contemporary, an independent art gallery of modern and contemporary British art.
