Kedleston Hall

Built in the 1760s for Nathaniel Curzon, the hall is a prime example of neoclassical design, inspired by the grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome. Renowned architect, Robert Adam, meticulously designed every detail from the impressive facade and the opulent interiors, to the picturesque parklend.

Inside the Hall

Curzon envisioned Kedleston Hall as a ‘temple of the arts,’ and Adam’s design does not disappoint. The Hall boasts opulent interiors filled with classical references. Discover paintings, sculptures, and original furniture, reflecting both the Curzon family’s love of art and their fascination with the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Admire the intricate plasterwork ceilings, Roman busts and acquaint yourself with the nieteenth century books that form part of Lord Curzon’s working library.

The grounds

The parkland and pleasure grounds were also designed by Kedleston Hall’s architect, Robert Adam. Since 2019 an ongoing project to restore the original features of the garden has seen colourful floral results. Although it is now closed for safety reasons, the Grade II listed orangery built in 1800 is still worth a look from the outside.

Legacy of Empire

The Curzon family history is intricately linked to British colonialism. George Nathaniel Curzon, was Viceroy of India in the late 19th century. The house displays a collection of objects he amassed during his travels in Asia, offering a glimpse into the cultural exchange, and often, the power imbalances, of the British Empire.
