Montrose Museum and Art Gallery
Founded in 1842, Montrose Museum and Art Gallery is housed in an impressive Neoclassical building, one of the first purpose-built museums in Scotland.
Designed in the neo-classical style, the building itself is a nod to Greek temples of learning, with imposing Ionic columns flanking the entrance. Inside, three large galleries house artefacts that tell the story of Scottish town of Montrose and its people.
What to see
Wander through the galleries and embark on a chronological journey. The museum's collection boasts Bronze Age swords and Pictish stones, archaeological remnants of the area's earliest inhabitants. Learn about the town's most famous resident, the gallant Marquis of Montrose, and delve into the Jacobite uprisings. The museum also showcases the coastal town's rich seafaring heritage.
Take in some art
The art gallery hosts changing exhibitions from the community and from Angus Council’s collections of paintings and sculptures. Find works by local artists such as William Lamb, Edward Baird and George Paul Chalmers. The exhibitions are constantly changing, offering visitors a chance to experience a variety of artistic styles and themes.
Activities for all ages
The Montrose Museum and Art Gallery offers a series of afternoon talks that delve deeper into local history and art. For younger visitors, there are special children's activities designed to make learning fun and occasionally, the museum also hosts entertaining evening events.
