The Museum of English Rural Life explores farming, food, and the history of the English countryside.

Since 1951 the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) has been dedicated to showcasing the ever-evolving story of England's countryside and its people. Owned by the University of Reading, it boasts the distinction of being the first and most comprehensive museum of its kind in the country.

Themed displays

Explore MERL's nine thoughtfully curated galleries, each with a unique theme. These include ‘A Year on the Farm’ where you can witness the seasonal cycle of agricultural life, ‘Town and Country’ which explores the historical relationship between these two distinct environments, and ‘Forces for Change’ which looks at advance in processes and technology.

What to see

There are many agricultural tools and other interesting items to discover throughout the galleries. Look out for a Fordson Tractor and threshing machine, Womens Land Army clothing, livestock portraits, Suttons Seeds display cabinet, a wagon and cart collection and even wellies that belonged to Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis.

Specialist library

The Tools and Trades History Society’s Library is housed at MERL. The collection includes books, manuals, trade catalogues and pamphlets relating to hand tools for wood carving, furniture making, boot making, carpentry, joinery and many other types of crafts and trades.

Family fun

Enjoy the fun hands-on activities and interactives throughout the galleries. Free trails suitable for children of all ages are available both inside the gallery and in the MERL garden, plus family activity packs are available in the gift shop.
