Housing over 750,000 objects, the Museum of Gloucester unveils the rich tapestry of the city’s history. From its humble beginnings as a Roman settlement to its medieval transformation, the museum offers a captivating journey through time.
Roman roots
Step back in time and explore the foundations of Gloucester. The museum boasts Roman walls, Interactive exhibits, including a Roman kitchen playhouse, bring this era to life. The archaeology collection includes the world-famous Birdlip Mirror and impressive Roman tombstones.
Medieval games
Elsewhere you will find a medieval street and the Gloucester Tables Set, the oldest complete backgammon set in the world.
Art gallery
For art enthusiasts, the museum houses a renowned collection featuring works by renowned British painters like Thomas Gainsborough, Richard Wilson, John Atkinson Grimshaw and Thomas Dibdin. The museum also runs interesting temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
