Located on the historic site of Derby Silk Mill, a key part of the industrial revolution, the Museum of Making celebrates innovation.
Set in the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Museum of Making is a contemporary space telling Derby’s 300-year history of invention and production. Enjoy exhibits, workshops, activities and events, a café and a shop at this venue which was a finalist for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022.
What to see
Inside the museum, you'll find a vast array of objects and displays that tell the story of Derby's manufacturing past. From the early days of silk production to the industrial revolution and beyond, there are 30,000 objects for the public to enjoy.

The Museum of Making is not just a place to learn about the past, but also a space for creativity and exploration. Families can participate in a variety of activities, such as building their own marble runs, designing their own pottery, or taking part in guided tours and workshops. The museum also hosts regular events and exhibitions, ensuring there's always something new to discover.

The museum features a fascinating display dedicated to the history of Rolls-Royce and its relationship to Derby, including a seven tonne Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 jet engine suspended in the atrium.
